SUMMER TOURIST HIGHLIGHT
Monte Vista, Colorado
I had been dying to visit this peculiar combo of motel and drive-in ever since I moved to Colorado (16 years ago). I just loved the idea of it. So this year, after a day at Great Sand Dunes National Park we drove the extra half hour to check it out. It’s seemingly in the middle of nowhere. A no-tell looking motel with nothing eye catching except two giant screens. The rooms have big glass windows that face out at one of them (the other is a true Drive-In). The tackiness of the place was resplendent, starting from the moment you climb the stairs and see these little faux gold name plates above the doors with movie stars’ names on them. We were in 216, the Warren Beatty room, though of course the girls had no idea who he was. I told them he once dated Madonna which gave him some motel cred. Next door —was the Betty (sic) Davis room. I just loved that. At 8:30 we got in our p.j.’s and with the night sky emerging we cranked up the in-room speakers, layered ourselves on the near window bed and chairs and passed around the Goldenberg’s Peanut Chews and Sour Gummy Worms we had purchased at Cracker Barrel. Hello, Star Trek. Not much of a Trek fan but I loved the movie, especially from the privacy of our $100. a- night room. You better believe I bought a postcard.
